How to Ask for Referrals in B2B Sales in 2026: 6 Signs a Client Is Ready, and What to Say
The CRM, inbox and LinkedIn signals that show which customers to ask, word-for-word asks that get names, and an intro your customer can forward as is.
A B2B referral is an introduction from a customer, or anyone who has seen your work, to a person at another company who could buy from you. In 6sense's 2025 survey of nearly 4,000 B2B buyers, 68% already knew a seller at the vendor they bought from. The winning vendor was on the shortlist buyers started with 95% of the time. A referral is one way a buyer who has never met your team gets to know one of your sellers before that shortlist is written.
Which customers should you ask for a referral?
V. Kumar, J. Andrew Petersen and Robert Leone measured reference value at a B2B financial services firm and a telecom firm (Journal of Marketing, 2013): your most valuable customers are often not your best references. So don't default to your biggest accounts. Ask customers with a fresh reason to talk about you, and check them for these six signals:
| Signal | Where | Your opening line |
|---|---|---|
| Praised a result | Email, calls | "You wrote that the new routing saved your planners about a day a week." |
| Named a peer | Email, calls | "You mentioned a peer at another logistics company has the same problem." |
| First month live | CRM | "Now that the first month is done, what has changed for your team?" |
| Gave a reference | CRM | "Thank you again for taking the call with Maya's team last week." |
| Renewed | CRM | "Thanks for renewing. What made it an easy decision?" |
| Promoted or moved | "Congratulations on the new role. What do you want to fix first?" |
Among the customers showing a signal, pick the one who looks most like the prospect. For an intro to a logistics company, ask your logistics customer.
Search emails and call notes each week for phrases like "saved us", "made a difference" and "a friend at", and add each hit as a task on the account. A promotion or move counts because the result you delivered is now part of their track record, and a new role means new peers.
When is the best time to ask a customer for a referral?
Ask within two weeks of a moment the customer can point to. Don't ask when the first contract is signed, before they have a result to repeat. Don't ask while a support issue is open or a price negotiation is underway, because the ask then reads as a trade.
The best moment is often inside the meeting, right after the customer says something like "this has saved us a lot of time". Ask then: "Glad to hear it. Who do you know at another logistics company who runs dispatch and still plans routes by hand?"
To make sure the moment comes up, set a CRM task 30 days after every go-live: "Has the first result landed? If yes, ask within two weeks, at the next call or by email." If not, find what is blocking the first result, solve it, and set the 30-day task again. On each renewal date, add a second task: "Renewed this week? Ask within two weeks, once the renewal is signed."
What should you say when you ask for a referral?
Describe one kind of person by role, company type and problem, then ask "who", not "if". "Who do you know who fits that?" gets a name. "Can you think of anyone who could use this?" gets a polite "I'll think about it".
Swap vague asks for specific ones:
| Instead of | Say |
|---|---|
| "Any referrals would be appreciated." | "Which dispatch head at another logistics company, still planning routes by hand, would you call first?" |
| "Nobody comes to mind? No worries." | "Of the dispatch heads you compare notes with at other logistics companies, who complains most about route planning?" |
The second ask helps when the customer can't think of anyone, because the peers they trade notes with are the people they would introduce. If they still can't name someone, thank them and ask again after the next result.
By email, use three parts: their result, the person you want to meet, and the offer to write the note.
How do you make the introduction easy for the customer?
Write the intro yourself and send it to the customer, so all they have to do is forward it. Keep it under 100 words: who you are, the result they got in their own words, why this person should care, and an easy way to say no.
In a survey of 1,202 US business decision-makers published by SurveyMonkey and Reddit in March 2026, 73% trusted peer recommendations, against 55% for vendor websites. So the note should come from the customer.
Fill in what the customer told you about the person, and tell them to change anything that doesn't sound like them. If the note has a number they never said, they may cut it or not send it at all.
Ask them to copy you when they forward it, so you can reply on the same thread.
How do you follow up on a referral and thank the customer?
Thank the customer the same day the intro goes out. Reply to the prospect within one business day, naming the customer in your first line. Then report back to the customer twice: when the first call is booked, and when the deal closes or stops.
Reporting back shows the customer you treated their contact well, which makes the next intro easier: "Anna booked a call for Thursday. Thank you for the intro, and I'll tell you how it goes." If it goes nowhere: "It wasn't the right time for them, but your note opened the door."
Add a "Referred by" field to deals in HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive or Attio. After a quarter, compare the win rate of referred deals with your other sources, as in our guide to sales metrics that matter, and put the deal count next to each rate.
Frequently asked questions
What should you do this week to get your first referrals?
Pull every customer with a fresh reason to talk about you in the last two weeks, such as a result they praised or a renewal. Send three asks this week, and log each one as a note on the account, so the next rep sees who was asked and when. After a month, count intros and meetings.
Then make three asks a month part of every rep's routine.
