# Install the Spiich Recorder

> Download the Spiich Recorder from Settings > Meeting Agent, then pair it to your account with a 6-digit code that expires after 10 minutes. It needs a Meeting Recorder license an admin grants.

## Before you start

- A Meeting Recorder license on your Spiich user. A workspace admin grants it.
- macOS on Apple silicon or Intel, or Windows 10 or 11 on x64. There is no Linux build.
- Google or Microsoft connected, so the recorder can show your meetings.

The Spiich Recorder is the only client that records a call. The web app, the Chrome extension and the mobile app can take short voice notes, but none of them captures a meeting. Install it once per computer and pair it to your account with a 6-digit code.

## The Meeting Recorder license

Pairing needs a per-seat Meeting Recorder license on your user. Without one, [`Settings > Meeting Agent`](https://app.spiich.ai/settings/notetaker) shows `Meeting recorder license required` where the pairing code should be.

- **A workspace admin grants it** from [`Settings > User Management`](https://app.spiich.ai/settings/user-management). The in-app message points at `Settings > Team`; the page is actually called User Management.
- **An admin on a self-serve plan can grant one to themselves** with `Grant myself a license` on the Meeting Agent page. The card states what it adds to the subscription before you confirm.
- **Contract customers go through their account manager.** The self-serve grant is not offered and the page says so.

> **Admin only:** Granting and revoking licenses is admin-only, and revoking signs that user's paired devices out. When a revoke takes effect depends on whether it is the last seat of that add-on. See [Manage teammates and roles](/help/workspace/manage-your-team).

## Download and pair

1. **Open Settings > Meeting Agent**
   Everything about the recorder lives on this one page: downloads, pairing codes, connected devices and what happens after a meeting.

2. **Download the build for your machine**
   Under `Recorder downloads`, pick `Apple silicon` (macOS, M1 and newer), `Intel Mac` (macOS, x64 builds) or `Windows` (Windows 10 and 11, x64), then click `Download`.

3. **Install it**
   On macOS, open the disk image and drag **Spiich Recorder** into your Applications folder, then launch it from there rather than from Downloads. On Windows, run the setup file.

4. **Get past the Windows warning**
   Windows builds are unsigned, so Microsoft Defender SmartScreen shows a "Windows protected your PC" screen on first launch. Click `More info`, then `Run anyway`. Automatic updates after the first install are silent and never show the warning again.

5. **Generate a pairing code**
   Back in the web app, under `Settings > Meeting Agent > Pairing code`, click `Generate pairing code`. Click the code itself to copy it. It expires in 10 minutes and works once.

6. **Enter the code in the recorder**
   The app opens on `Step 1 of 2`, "Pair this device with your Spiich account". Type or paste the 6 digits. It pairs as soon as the sixth digit lands, or click `Pair recorder`.

7. **Grant the macOS permissions**
   The app moves to `Step 2 of 2`, "Give Spiich access to your device", and asks for Accessibility, Microphone and System Audio. Windows skips this step entirely. See [Recorder permissions and capture](/help/meetings/recorder-permissions).

8. **Check the device appears**
   In the web app, `Settings > Meeting Agent > Connected devices` should now list the machine with its name and when it was last used.

## What happens next

The recorder lives in your macOS menu bar or Windows tray. Click it for a week view of your meetings grouped by day, each row showing times, attendee count, a countdown and a `Join` button. Inside the last five minutes before a meeting the menu bar itself becomes a countdown, and during a call it shows how much is left.

With `Auto-record meetings` on, the default, it starts recording as soon as it detects a meeting window. When you stop a recording, the meeting row shows `Processing` until the summary and transcript are ready, then the meeting opens with Briefing, Summary and Transcript tabs.

## Updates

The recorder updates itself. `Install updates automatically (recommended)` is on by default and only restarts when it is safe: never during an active call, never while a recording is still being finalised, not straight after you have been using the computer, not within 30 minutes of a meeting, and not while your calendar state is unknown. Turning it off keeps the checks and downloads, and `Install and restart` under `Recorder > Settings > SOFTWARE` is always available.

> **Careful:** `Enable experimental releases` opts one installation into an early update feed and those builds may be unstable. Enabling or leaving requires a confirmation and a restart, and returning to stable leaves the experimental build installed until a newer stable version ships.

## Limits

- macOS on Apple silicon or Intel, and Windows 10 and 11 on x64. No Linux build.
- Pairing codes are 6 digits, expire after 10 minutes, and each one works once.
- Without a Meeting Recorder license no pairing code is issued at all.
- Revoking a device under `Connected devices`, or revoking that user's license, cuts the installation off immediately.
- The recorder lists only meetings you are a participant in, taken from your connected calendar.

## If something goes wrong

- **`Meeting recorder license required` instead of a code.** Ask an admin to grant your license from `Settings > User Management`. If you are an admin on a self-serve plan, use `Grant myself a license`. Contract customers ask their account manager.
- **The pairing code is struck through and shows dashes.** It expired. Click `Regenerate` and enter the new digits.
- **Windows blocks the installer with a blue screen.** The build is unsigned. Click `More info`, then `Run anyway`.
- **The recorder shows "Nothing scheduled this week".** Its list comes from your connected calendar. Connect Google or Microsoft under [`Settings > Integrations`](https://app.spiich.ai/settings/integrations), then reopen the app.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I pair more than one computer?

Yes. Generate a fresh pairing code for each machine. Every paired installation is listed under `Settings > Meeting Agent > Connected devices` with its name and when it was last used, and you can revoke any of them there.

### What happens to a device when I revoke it?

Revoking cuts that installation off immediately: its access stops working and it signs out. Nothing already recorded is deleted. Pair it again later with a new code if you need to.

### Does the recorder work if my laptop is offline?

The recorder gets your meeting list from your connected calendar and hands finished recordings to Spiich for transcription and summarization, so it needs a connection for both. A recording stays on `Processing` until Spiich has finished with it.

### What does the license cost?
